An Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor
During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book lodging upon arrival, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a bus into town and started wandering near a gaming venue, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that was open all night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak to succeed at the admissions interview the next day, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
I must have looked out of place as a woman saw me wandering around downtown and wondered if everything was alright. I recounted my predicament and immediately she said I could sleep on the ground in her student dorm at the local university – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. She went further by offering some food: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and safe to sleep.
Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took as a young woman inviting a guy she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she did that – but still incredibly thankful.
I never did study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her generosity many times over. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
