In a major move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract for the accomplished player.
Financial Terms and Player Perks
The agreement features a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, in addition to compensation of $16M for the next season and $17 million for the final year.
Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for being named the league MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- A quarter-million for placing between fourth and tenth.
- $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.
His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his consent and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Franchise History
As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of over $6.5 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows are also entitled to a additional payment of 15% triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to play for the South Siders, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a young core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the division but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.
Having earned Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's coveted Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Despite striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
WBC Heroics
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The very next day in the final against the United States, he blasted a game-tying homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be unveiled at a press conference on the coming Monday.
