The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
