Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
