Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I said no," Newsom commented when asked about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he noted that any decision is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary
Newsom has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, using his digital presence and advocating for a initiative that would expand the party's congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to withhold federal funds from California and warned revoking the authority to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," Duffy said, following a this week's deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that led to loss of life and injured individuals.
His administration pointed out that the federal government had renewed the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to receive a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had before announced he was blocking additional funds from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team said in a recent statement responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A recent poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for president in 2028. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has risen to an average of about one-third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of more than 40% to under 40%.
Earlier this year, Newsom stated while on a trip several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The idea that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the voters."
