Heavy Rains Exacerbate Situation for Uprooted Palestinians in Gaza, Agencies Warn

Intense precipitation over the recent period have worsened the precarious living conditions of the hundreds of thousands of evacuated civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to humanitarian agencies.

"Horrendous" Night Creates Grave Risks

A spokesman characterized the previous night's conditions as "terrible", with rain so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the terrain.

"Last night was exceptionally terrible for the residents. The heavy rains were so strong... And the gales were so powerful," stated the spokesperson.

Officials express grave concern that children sheltering in temporary structures in wet attire will contract hypothermia and other illnesses.

Casualties and Widespread Damage

Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has succumbed from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have been killed in building collapses triggered by the severe weather.

Additional accounts put a increased number of casualties. Officials said that numerous homes had collapsed completely and dozens had sustained partial collapse.
