Iconic London landmark Architect Puts Forward Ambitious 14-Mile Tidal Power Station Off Somerset Coast

The renowned designer behind the London Eye has unveiled plans for a massive tidal energy project curving in a fourteen-mile arc off the Somerset shoreline. This groundbreaking scheme seeks to harness the power of the tides to meet surging electricity demand, fueled in part by the expansion in artificial intelligence. Intriguingly, the proposal also envisions a unique cycle track that would allow riders to skim over the waters of the Bristol Channel.

The £11bn Vision

The architect, who also created the i360 observation tower, is leading a team that has drawn up the £11bn plan. The structure would sweep from Minehead to Watchet and utilize approximately 125 underwater turbines to generate power from the area's exceptionally high tidal variation.

“If the decision is to go ahead with adopting increasing AI use – something that surprises me is not being questioned more during a climate crisis – then it is far better with a renewable energy source,” stated the architect. “Datacentres could double energy demand and this is a predictable and reliable source.”

Addressing the AI Energy Crunch

The proposal emerges amid growing concern that the rapidly rising use of AI in the UK will drive up greenhouse gases unless more low-carbon power are developed. The AI boom is expected to add to steep rises in power consumption across the nation.

The proposed barrage would not cross the entire width of the channel. Instead, it would form a semi-circular structure boasting a maximum output of 2.5GW – comparable to the output of the nearby Hinkley Point C power station. This output would be enough to power around two million homes.

A Multi-Use Landmark

The broader plan extends far beyond power production. It proposes a walkway along the top of the lagoon wall for pedestrians and cyclists, a water-sports marina, a open-air swimming pool, and an viewing platform. Planners have also floated the idea that datacentres could be housed within the structure, taking advantage of cost-effective cooling from the sea.

Further elements envision oyster and mussel beds, arrays of floating solar panels, and a coastal amphitheatre to boost the economy of the area, which has experienced economic challenges in recent years.

A Reliable Energy Source

Energy from tides is considered more reliable than solar or wind power, despite daily periods when the tide changes. Backers of the West Somerset Lagoon believe it would have a lifespan of 120 years, thereby generating power more cost-effectively than nuclear energy over its lifetime.

The project was originally imagined some time back with the goal of lowering the UK's carbon footprint. The more recent AI revolution has created further impetus to the proposal, as electricity demand from data infrastructure are predicted to rise dramatically in the coming decades.

Overcoming Hurdles

This newest plan is the most recent in a long line of schemes to harness the tidal energy of the Severn Estuary. Previous proposals for larger barrages have sparked worries about environmental impact. The current sponsors stress that their lagoon design would not interfere with navigation routes to major ports and is situated away from specially designated conservation zones.

“Minehead and that whole area of the county is an area of deprivation and this initiative will drive positive transformation,” the architect commented. “It will generate high-quality full-time jobs, facilities for aquatic sports, a lido, a visitors’ centre, an observation deck and arts venues.”
