‘It’s Our Turn’: Firearms-Safety Activists Surf a ‘Tectonic’ Surge into US Statehouses.

A new generation of young elected officials is ascending to office across the United States by channeling their firsthand encounters with gun violence to push for policy changes they believe the country is ready for.

Their ascent signifies a multi-year transformation. Gun violence prevention has moved from a third-rail issue seldom discussed on the stump to a central platform that politicians, predominantly from the Democratic party, are now campaigning on successfully.

Widespread Fatigue Drives the Shift

This evolution is fueled in part by a collective exhaustion with firearms deaths, encompassing large-scale attacks – such as recent incidents at Brown University and Bondi Beach – as well as gun-related suicides and street violence, which persist in devastating too many American lives.

“This is a problem that has directly touched me,” explained a Tennessee state representative. “There was something about a state representative and seeing a lack of action, while remembering the effects in my neighborhood, that pushed me to say this is an issue we must address urgently.”

The day he was sworn in coincided with the deadliest shooting in Tennessee history, when three children and three adults were shot and killed at a Covenant school.

Expulsion and a National Spotlight

Shortly after, he and several state Democrats staged a demonstration on the house floor to call for stronger gun policy. Pearson and his colleague were removed from office for their action, an act that catapulted them to national prominence. They later reclaimed their seats.

Months later, Pearson’s brother was lost to a firearm suicide. This was not his first encounter with violent loss; previously, his guide and a former classmate were also shot and killed in his hometown.

Now, he is campaigning for a federal office by placing firearms safety at the heart of his campaign platform. He highlights how it impacts the state’s young residents, for whom gunshot wounds are the primary killer.

A Movement Becomes a Pipeline

The rise of office-seekers focusing on gun violence is also a result of the expanding prevention movement across the nation, which has become a recruitment channel for new candidates.

  • Maxwell Frost, the country’s first Gen Z congressmember, started off as a volunteer with March for Our Lives.
  • Lucy McBath, a Congresswoman, and Abigail Spanberger, a soon-to-be governor, were both involved with a grassroots safety organization before entering politics.
  • Cameron Kasky, a Parkland survivor who helped to organize student protests, has recently announced his own run for a House seat.
“I see myself as a piece of a bigger movement. It’s the reason I got into politics,” said the congressman. “I was 15 when Sandy Hook happened and that’s what pushed me to get involved.”

A Seismic Shift in Politics

Nowadays, calling out pro-gun groups like the National Rifle Association is common among Democratic candidates. But in the recent past, many moderate Democrats held high ratings from the NRA, and the topic of regulating guns was considered a career-ending issue.

“It was gradual and full of ups and downs,” said a violence-prevention activist. “We saw our volunteers seeking election and thought it was logical that someone advocating for laws would want to take the next step.”

Advocates cite the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy and the lack of action in Congress to pass reforms as a watershed moment. This pushed formerly gun-friendly Democrats to abandon their high ratings to support limits on assault weapons. Now, receiving a poor grade from the group is a badge of honor.

“After Parkland, zero Democratic members of Congress had an A rating and were proud about it. That’s a dramatic change,” the advocate added. “It shattered a lot of myths and fears about being gun safety-forward.”

Personal Loss Fuels Political Action

The issue of gun violence has also mobilized first-time entrants to politics.

Shaundelle Brooks lost her son in a 2018 mass shooting in the city. Tragically, another son was wounded leaving a concert. After repeated trips of advocating at the capitol with no response, she chose to run for office.

“Coming up here for seven years and having them just ignoring me, showed me that I needed to do more than what I was doing,” she said.

“Knowing you’re directly affected, they feel that you’re more credible to talk about this. They know it’s not a political thing for us,” she added.

A New Generation’s Call

These personal experiences of tragedy unite advocates across the country, forming what victims and survivors describe as a “club no one wants to join.”

“We don’t have a formal network, but we all feel compelled in this moment to be a part of the healing,” the representative said of his fellow advocates. “The world is full of entrenched problems. We’ve given people decades to address them. And now, with our constituents’ support, the moment is ours.”

Pearson believes that addressing gun violence also requires action on common-ground problems like mental health access and economic stability, which might find more traction even in Republican-led legislatures. This broader view shows that being focused on ending firearms tragedies isn’t just about restrictions, but also about addressing the root causes.

“We’re not one-dimensional politicians,” he said. “We understand the intersectionality of the harms. It’s not just shootings. It’s economic hardship, environmental issues, neglected neighborhoods – these are the places with the highest levels of violence. We need leaders who have proximity to that pain.”

In the end, the candidate says inaction at the national level on measures like red flag laws and cooling-off periods has deadly outcomes.

“Because of that inaction, people are dying,” he said. “This problem isn’t going to be solved by repeating old strategies.”
