Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
