The Evolution of a Phenomenon is often characterized by clear stages.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or leaders present a revolutionary approach offering a cure for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment overseas. Pressure is mounting. Smoke is rising from the out-houses. A lone figure, exposed, anxious, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT written on his body as a symbol, has stumbled into view and is being led away in secrecy to a different team at Derbyshire.

Do you recall the early days, when optimism reigned? The days of Bazball 1.0, of uninhibited aggression.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders guarantee a new start, hope for a future, support, salvation together who all believe in the method.

What was this thing back then? A team united basking in glory. Ink. Strength. Focus. Confident masculinity. Admittedly, The squad insist it’s not a real term, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?

But we know what it is. It’s the player attempting a move so outrageous it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the captain at his peak, an expression conveying: focused titan, strong features, natural look, so authentically Modern Savage you half-expect to notice and see him playing in the field bare-chested holding a fish.

It’s the opener still being allowed speaking publicly, appearing as a joyful figure smartly dressed, saying stuff like we’re breaking down traditions. And yes, the atmosphere, for quite a long time, was only good energy.

3. Expansion Period

Development stage. Cohesion maintained via memorization of mantras. These principles may seem irrational to prove commitment.

Is it just me? The reaction, the anger, the sense of betrayal after the first Ashes Test defeat seems too strong, overdone. The performance was poor on the field, as is typical there. They were torn apart in the field in a short span when tactics failed, carved around by Travis Head batting like England but better, responsive to the situation, an athlete shining with brilliance.

And now we have this the criticism, the frustration, the perception of the team as a failure. The feeling seems to be that losing isn’t enough, they must be humbled, to be purged, obliterated, overwhelmed through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the simple basics of the bowler, seen enjoying achievements modestly like he’s just been given a pleasant gift. How will they respond?

4. External Conflict

Challenges surface from failures in the plan. Yet, mistakes are denied. It begins to thrive on hostility externally.

Ultimately, a few days before from the second Test, we have now reached a delicious point of tension in the story of this movement. They might succeed in the next Test through aggressive play. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. And if they do lose it feels like we really might be entering the death cult phase.

Ahead of this, there are two things to consider on the topic. In the past, during the initial excitement, of light and heat, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. Criticism followed, which was helpful as it’s known how to confirm that it’s not a closed group is if supporters react defensively objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.

The developments in the last few days is just as interesting. It seems that hating Bazball has turned into a movement. Online outrage is widespread, angry English pundits, shots of angry middle-aged travelling fans disappointed by the short match, similar to investors demanding recourse.

Conversely, there is the broader context of the host’s complex ingrained annoyance at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, claiming, the methods you value and have honed as one way of separating yourself from the opposition, well, it’s all a bit of a gag ultimately.

Here lies the truth. Everything is a cult. The approach was a phenomenon since the sport itself is insular. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a group, an elite gathering, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history defining it. It has long been where influence is guarded. It’s the imperial sport of the British, the original sports washers. And notably, Britain is itself a cult, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a monarchy still exists.

England’s cricketers have been enclosed in this system from a young age. Seeking change, to build a better atmosphere, they are just repeating their past, forming a new circle, a limited community, however with a new team and a mentor encouraging individuality provided you conform.

Stay present. Embrace challenges. But no matter how fast and far you run, things stay similar.

Considering this, it might be appropriate to show understanding for the approach, to appreciate its good points, which are significant. What is Bazball? Encouraging expression. Defying norms. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
