The Former Congresswoman Establishes History as Virginia's Initial Woman Governor

Over two and a half centuries, Virginia has been led by seventy-four governors, all of them men. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger overcame this glass ceiling by winning the election as the initial woman to hold the office in Virginia's annals.

Emphasizing Cost-of-Living Issues and Strategic Criticism

The former US congresswoman and CIA case officer won with a election strategy that focused on cost-of-living issues and carefully opposed Donald Trump's policies rather than the president himself.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in the Garden State on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a Richmond area at her early teens. Her dad was an army veteran who subsequently worked in police work; her mother was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She enrolled in the Virginia's flagship university, earning a degree in French studies. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a educator before turning to a life of service.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to walk the same path as my dad and I did,” Spanberger told attendees at a event in Norfolk, Virginia recently.

Public Service Career

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she worked cases involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She executed court mandates, frequently being the only woman on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and specialized in anti-terror efforts, serving undercover and internationally.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the Pacific coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They pulled out a globe and inquired of their eldest daughter, then in kindergarten, where they should go. Virginia, she answered, because “family and friends lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we decided to transition from a federal career, to state involvement because she was correct. Those dear to us lives in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in the commonwealth, she participated in a grassroots group, which combats firearm incidents, and started a youth group. In 2017, she decided to seek office, which people told her was a “long shot” because the party hadn't had won the congressional seat in 50 years.

“But I saw what the president was implementing with his authority and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I noticed my member of Congress over and over again work against the healthcare law. And I knew I had to do something. So spoiler: I succeeded.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In the capital, she rapidly became associated with the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of centrist and budget-conscious lawmakers. She focused on less visible matters: expanding broadband to rural areas, combating drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for working with Republicans and was frequently recognized as the most cooperative representative of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about messaging that she felt turned off moderate voters, cautioning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be used against them in swing areas.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a member of the “pragmatic group” in contrast to the left-leaning “group” of the New York representative.

Gubernatorial Campaign

In November 2023, she declared she would leave Congress for a another term and would rather seek the state's top office in 2025.

Her platform focused on themes of public service, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her CIA background lent her authority on national security issues and she spoke of public service as a vocation instead of a career.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to overcome Republican opponent her challenger's criticisms on social topics, notably the assertion that she is an extremist on civil rights and health care for transgender people.

Spanberger, who stated that individual districts should decide whether transgender students can participate in competitive sports, portrayed her opponent as the contender more out of step with the mainstream of the Virginia electorate.
